Why Do Parents Have a Smash Cake for Babys First Birthday

"The birthdays were in October, around Halloween, and then we did a Halloween-themed party," Kalavsky told TODAY.com. "[Livy'south smash block] was a jack-o-lantern, and I did a carrot cake."
Preparation, she said, was key. The mothers fabricated cupcakes for themselves (wanting to enjoy some baked goods without an accompanying behemothic mess), every bit well as cakes for their children to destroy. Earlier before letting the three infant girls loose with the boom cakes, the parents unrolled a drib cloth and placed the babies on pinnacle of it.

With or without a smash cake, parents should think that the event should be all about their kids, Florio-Urso advised.

"I think too many parents have a first birthday more for themselves, rather than for the child," she said. "Enjoy bonding with your infant during that fourth dimension. Kalavsky— now a mother to both Livy, 2½, and a 4½-month-old male child Miles— said a boom-cake party tin can serve as a metaphor for parenting.
"Babies are supposed to be messy," she said. "I think one of the hardest parts of parenting is embracing that fact...Let them be messy and have fun, but y'all can exercise it in a way that appeases your need to have things not completely destroyed."
